Like the River Dancer

In Karstenstrasse, there is a Blankeneser red-brick house. Light shines through the windows, illuminating the snow-capped Rhododendron bushes. A visitor follows the music down the stairs – the melodies are accompanied by the sound of clattering on wood. There must be a troupe of River Dancers down there!

The little corridor is packed with shoes. Boots with thick soles designed for walking, not dancing. Their owners have swapped them for tap shoes, and lined up in front of the mirrored walls in the small dance studio. “Shuffle-hop-step, shuffle-heel-toe” calls out the dance instructor Astrid Witt – Eggert, as she taps with her metallic soles on the wooden floor. Every week there are different tap-dancing classes, as well as many other dance styles on offer. Adults and children from Blankenese and beyond come to Karstenstrasse to learn the different dance styles. Astrid Witt – Eggert presses play on the stereo, and Michael Buble´s “Haven´t Met You Yet” fills the room. Three women and one man practice a combination, make mistakes, laugh together, then try again. “ Once again. On three, there is a stamp.” Astrid Witt- Eggert stamps with her whole foot.

The walking sticks in the corner of the room shake. They are still there from the rehearsals of the 25-year anniversary of the dance studio, when they were used on stage for a performance of “Steppin´out” along with fancy hats. All groups, including children, adults and seniors performed dances, from musical dance to Rock, Hip Hop and Jazz dance and even international Folklore.

On this winter´s evening, the advanced group is working on a new dance. The quickening stamps and shuffles imitate an approaching train. Some combinations are perfectly synchronized, but others still need work. “My carriage has been derailed !” sighs a dancer and laughs.

When the thick-soled shoes make their way back up the stairs in the late evening, it is an odd sensation. They look forward to make the clacking sounds again next week.

I can recommend violin and piano lessons in Blankenese with K.Apostolidis, for you and your child.
